Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X Review
It is well known that Xiaomi is an absolute champion in the world of affordable smartphones: year after year, they release modern, high-quality but still low-cost devices that outshine every smartphone of the same price range. Xiaomi doesn’t settle for less when it comes to their budget devices: it is a priority to enable buyers to get the most out of their products, even if they’re under $100.
One of these affordable devices is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, released back in 2017. The Note 4X was a step up from their previous release, the beloved Redmi Note 4, and an amazing upgrade for anyone carrying an older Xiaomi smartphone. But how does the phone compare today? Is it still worth purchasing?
Although the device retailed for $202, it can currently be purchased for under $100, making it one of the most affordable smartphones on the market. With that in mind, let’s talk about its features.
First look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X
The similarities with the Redmi Note 4 are almost uncanny: they both have a beautiful 5.5 screen and a simple, modern style. The Redmi Note 4X has a sleek metal back and many color choices to further personalize the experience. Xiaomi lovers very much appreciated the use of metal: it isn’t common for a phone of its price range to have a high-quality build, and the metal back ensures just that.
The square shape and rounded edges give it a modern look without compromising the overall feel, making it a perfect mixture between comfort and aesthetics.
However, there is one thing to keep in mind: the bezels on the device are pretty big, especially on the top and bottom of the screen. It was a norm for phones in 2017 to have bezels; however, it isn’t anymore, and newer smartphones try to avoid it completely. Nevertheless, the phone has a surprisingly trendy look, especially if you buy it in a vibrant blue or soft pink color.
Enjoy the improved features
There are a few obvious changes that differentiate Note 4X from its predecessor: the new updated OS runs smoother for an overall better user experience, the improved Ram and storage options (you can get 4GB of Ram as well as 64 GB of storage, which wasn’t an option on previous devices) allows for more complicated actions and so on.
Although the battery life hasn’t been improved since the Redmi Note 4, it is still extraordinary for a budget smartphone: the Redmi Note 4X carries a 4,100 mAh battery that will last you a lot longer than anticipated.
The impressive back camera takes bright, high-quality pictures, especially if you turn the HDR mode and experiment with the settings.
We also have to mention the unbelievable fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone: you can use it to unlock your phone and authorize specific actions. The Redmi Note 4X is one of the few devices under $100 that possess this technology and implement it correctly into their smartphones.
Unfortunately, compared to its predecessor, most Note 4X improvements are almost invisible to an average user: enhanced Bluetooth, changes in the processor, and the sensors aren’t as noticeable to us.
However, we shouldn’t only look at Redmi Note 4X by comparing it to the previous model, but rather by looking at the other devices of similar price. When it comes to that, the Redmi Note 4X is a marvelous contestant, beating most smartphones on the market.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X isn’t perfect
We’ve already mentioned the smartphone’s first downside: the bezels on the top and bottom of the front screen. Considering the device’s price, this isn’t a huge turn-off, but it can be off-putting for some.
There are also differences depending on the version you purchase: for example, if you purchase the international version, you will get the same Snapdragon 624 octa-core processor, and therefore won’t see any significant improvement from the Note 4 device. That is why you need to be extra careful while buying older Xiaomi models.
It is clear that a $100 phone can’t hold the features of a high-end smartphone. For example, the camera is impressive for the phone’s price but can still struggle in poor lighting resulting in grainy photos.
There is also an issue of availability: the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X needs to be imported from China. This means that you need to wait several weeks for your device to arrive, and you might pay additional import fees. However, we still have to consider that the phone is ridiculously cheap even with the fees, so this aspect shouldn’t bother you.
In addition, because the phone isn’t for the US or UK market, you might encounter some issues with the 4G service. Many countries like the US, for example, use different frequencies, and your phone might not work as well for that reason.
Lastly, the phone isn’t water-resistant in any way. This means that a wet or even humid environment can be fatal for your device, so be careful; you cannot expose it to rain.
Is Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X a phone for me?
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X isn’t a smartphone made to rival the high-end devices on the market. Instead, its biggest advantage is the low price point: like with many other Xiaomi smartphones, there aren’t any devices of the same price that can rival this phone and its features.
We must keep in mind that this is a fairly simple device: it cannot compete with newer Xiaomi devices or premium smartphones. That’s why we would recommend this device only to people who enjoy easy and minimalistic technology and don’t want to spend a lot of money on newer, pricier devices.
Suppose you are a fan of the newest smartphone features. In that case, you can choose one of the recent Xiaomi budget phones, and the price will still be pretty reasonable: we recommend checking out newer Redmi Note devices and fitting them into your budget to get the full Xiaomi experience.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is still an amazing device under $100: it will satisfy users looking for an easy smartphone experience and a convenient device to use for their everyday tasks. And the price really can’t get any better!
